Here we are again
with the end of another year rapidly approaching. By the time we get to
December, it always seems to me as if we are on a slippery slide down hill to
Christmas and all that it entails.
So many people
find Christmas really stressful. The food and presents need organizing. We must
decide who we are spending which part of Christmas with and we may have to
include relatives we do not like very much as well as those we love and cherish.
Christmas stuff
seems to come under two headings: Weeds and Roses.
Yellow Rose/Hilary Thompson |
Roses are the Christmas
things we enjoy doing. For example: Christmas Pageants; Carols by Candlelight;
Office Parties (well some of them); meeting up and spending time with friends
that we enjoy being with, but only manage to catch up with at Christmas; wrapping
and giving presents; putting up decorations around the house and decorating the
Christmas tree; watching the children’s faces filled with joy; anticipation and
excitement; eating and drinking fare that we only have as treats on special
occasions.
Weeds are the bits of Christmas we are not happy about: The
pre- Christmas rush to get all the shopping and organizing done; (Phew!) negotiations
with the family about where you are going to spend Christmas and who is going
to cook the Christmas dinner.
Then there can be
the issue of having to spend time during Christmas with relatives that you
don’t really like much. It can take the shine off what is supposed to be a
happy time if you let it.

HOWEVER – maybe
all you have to do is change your perspective. Even weeds have a beauty about
them if you look hard enough. Take the weeds in this picture for example.
You might dismiss it and say “Oh it’s just a weed!” But, look at how these
weeds have a little ring of delicate white flowers around the spiky bit. It
looks just like a little halo of white light. Look at the shape of the weed.
How perfect it is.
Daisy Weed/Hilary Thompson |
Here is another weed to demonstrate my point.
It’s just a sort of Daisy! But, look at the
beautiful yellow colour and the pretty shape of the flower. So I if you change
your perspective of weeds from being a nuisance to seeing them as a thing of beauty,
notice how your feelings towards them change. They are still weeds, and they
may not be useful in your garden, but they are beautiful in their own way.
So here’s the thing. If you have to spend time with people who
you are not really keen on, try changing your perspective of them. Have a go at
looking for something that you can
like or appreciate about them and turn them from a Weed into a Rose!
Try it
just for Christmas Day and then maybe even into the future your relationship
with them will change for the better.
Wishing You All a Happy Christmas & New Year full of Roses!
Hilary Thompson
