All of us have three major operational systems that we use to help us deal with every day life. Visual - that which we see with our eyes, Auditory - that which we hear with our ears and Kinaesthetic - that which we emotionally feel or by using body movements.
My first Blog, Taming The Monkey Mind, satisfied our Visual and Auditory operational systems. This Blog is about satisfying our Kinaesthetic operational system.
How do we do that? We write; and I am not talking about typing onto a computer screen. I am talking about the old fashioned way of using pen and paper. The actual physical act of writing with a pen or pencil satisfies our Kinaesthetic operational system and is therefore more effective than typing for this particular exercise.
So how do we do this and what is the benefit?
- Create the affirmation that is appropriate for you at the time. (See my last Blog, Taming The Monkey Mind to find out how to create your affirmation.)
- Write your affirmation on a large piece of paper. Having written your affirmation, stop and be quiet for a moment.
- Listen for the chatter in your mind. Regardless of what is being said in your head;( even if it is horrible) write it down quickly, without worrying about punctuation, grammar etc. Keep writing until the chatter stops. This is called Free Form Writing. It does not matter what you write because no one , including yourself, is going to read it.
- At the end of your Free Form Writing, write out your affirmation again and see if any more chatter occurs in your mind. If there is more chatter, repeat the Free Form Writing.
- When you can write out your affirmation and your mind is empty of chatter, you are done! Easy! Now shred the papers that you have been writing on and put them in the garbage bin, never to be seen again.
Free Form Writing is a technique that is also useful for de-stressing yourself. Write down all the details of what is upsetting you, again ignoring punctuation, grammar etc. Then when you feel that you have got it all out of your system, shred the paper without reading it and again, put it in the garbage bin.
Affirmations and Free Form Writing I have often used very sucessfully myself and with my Clients. It is a very powerful way to help yourself to control the Monkey in your mind. The greatest benefit is that it leads to a more peaceful mind; something that we all need to achieve to live our best lives.
