So many of us have such busy and often stressful lives, that we do not take the time to sit back and reflect on what is going on around us.
Reflection is actually a useful way of winding down at the end of the day. Here is my Recipe for Reflection. It only needs to take a few minutes.
1. Sit quietly and think about what has happened during the day. Run it through your mind like a movie. Make sure that you are watching the movie as if you were in a Cinema. Then you are able to look at it with detachment which will help you to learn from what you experienced.
2.Ask yourself some questions: What happened today that was good? What happened today that was not was not so good? What did I learn today? If there are some parts of the day that make you wince, think to yourself, what can I do next time to handle the situation better?
This is not about beating yourself up for the mistakes that you made, it is about learning from what happened and thinking of a different way of handling the situation, next time a similar situation occurs.
3. Write down the new way of behaving that you have just invented, so that you have a reminder to refer to. Always remember that if one way does not give you the result that you want, try another. It is all about experimenting and learning.
Having completed this exercise, you will probably find that you feel more relaxed and can go to bed and sleep.
